Find Amps from a KVA Rating

KVA (kilo volt amperes) is a measurement of overall electrical power. Amps or amperes are just one element required for finding an electrical devices KVA. Voltage is the other element needed for calculating the KVA of any electrical piece of equipment. Generally the voltage and amperage of any electrical device is specified on either the device itself or in the manufacturers provided specifications. Kilo is equal to 1000. An electrical device that is rated at 1 KVA is equal to 1000 VA (volt amperes).

List:
Device electrical specifications in VA

Find the KVA of an electrical motor that is powered by 240 volts and has an operational amperage of 30 amperes. These specifications of the voltage and amperage will be listed on the metal identification plate of the motor. In most cases, the motor identification plate is located on top of the motor housing.

Multiply 240 volts times 30 amperes. The result is 7200 VA.

Find the electrical motor KVA. Divide 7200 VA by 1000. The final result is 7.2 KVA.

Calculate the KVA rating for an electric stove and range with a specification of 240 volts at 60 amperes power draw.

Multiply 240 volts times 60 amperes, the VA rating is equal to 14,400-volt amperes.

Divide 14,400 VA by 1000 to find the total KVA. The result is equal to 14.4 KVA.

Words to the Wise:
All electrical devices will have a specification that indicates the supply voltage required to operate the device, and a total amperage draw that the device uses.
