That Time of the Year

Seed catalogs have been coming in the mail almost daily for the last month.  They are wonderful to browse through.  So many choices, yet only so much space.  But as of today, our choices have been made and our order is in.

This year, we decided to only grow what we like to eat.  I know that seems like it should be obvious, but it's amazing how many times we've planted stuff that neither of us likes to eat.  (And we're not the only ones either - most of our neighbors do the same thing). 

So this year, there will be no radishes and probably no beets either.  Not that I don't like them occasionally, I just don't like them abundantly.  We seem to have this habit that if we plant something, we plant a lot of it.  Overkill, really, but just seems to be the way of it.

So what did we buy?

Here's the short list:

Beans, tomatoes, lettuces, cabbages, peppers, carrots, and squashes and eggplant.  Potatoes and onions, we'll pick up locally.  (It's only two months till potatoes go in the ground.)

But, we may have jumped the gun a tad bit.  Kevin built a small, moveable, hot house to set on top of the woodstove.  In it, we already have tomatoes spouting and are hoping the peppers break their little growing pot ground soon.  With luck the greenhouse plastic will be here and we get in on, before these little seedlings get too tall for their little home.

So, while it may be the dead of winter here in the Ozarks, all I have to do is look above the woodstove and know that spring is just around the corner.
